“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

Where are you from and how long have you been living in Japan?
I am originally from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. I have taught in Australia, Norway, China and now here.I have been living in Japan since August of 2014.

What did you study, why, and what did you like the most?
I completed a Bachelor of Education so I could work as a PYP teacher. Since my formal study, I have continued to use research to improve my practice because I believe it helps me be a better teacher. It is important that I not only learn from others’ research but make a contribution to the professional body of knowledge that informs education. This is why I believe our school’s Teachers as Researchers program is so important. I also take every opportunity to attend PD to gain new knowledge and learn from others.

How long have you been teaching or working in Education?
I have been teaching for over 35 years. I have taught all grades from 1 to 7.

What are the achievements you are most proud of?
Seeing the students take responsibility for their own learning. The PYP Exhibition is a wonderful example of this.

What do you like most about teaching or working in Education?
Teaching is often underrated but it is the most important job of all. It is such an honor to have been a part of so many children’s lives. In IB schools, the aim is to make a better and more peaceful world. What a great system to be involved in.

No two days are ever the same. Life is always interesting as a teacher. But the best thing is watching students grow and discover things for themselves. It is so lovely to meet previous students and hear about their lives. I am constantly amazed at what I learn from the students’ different ways of seeing.

What are your roles here at A-JIS?
I teach grade 5. I am also a member of the maths committee.

What do you do for fun?
I enjoy travelling. I love exploring Japan. Last Summer I spent time travelling around Hokkaido in a camper van. I also like yoga, swimming and best of all, being lost in a good book.

Do you have any special sayings or expressions?
“Thinking takes effort but it is worth the reward.” That’s why we must give students time to think and to work with them to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to be discerning and thoughtful thinkers.
“Be kind.” Such a simple thing but so important.

Is there something interesting about yourself you would like to share?
I am learning Japanese and I have discovered I am a really bad student.
I have been in a Bollywood movie.
I have two gorgeous sons who still like to travel with me.
