Introducing Mr. Ferrick 20 March 2015

An Interview With Mr. Borrvs Ferrick, MYP Coordinator and Language Acquisition Teacher.

Mr. Ferrick has been living in Japan for 25 years. He brings 13 years of experience working for a Japanese private school and 11 with A-JIS. He is one of A-JIS’ longer tenured teachers who have been bringing a wealth of experience, expertise, and passion to his craft. He talked about his hobbies, which include keeping plants and animals, health and exercise, and going to his son’s sporting events. He mentioned how keeping plants and animals in his classroom “teaches the students how to understand and appreciate nature.” Walking into his classroom you can certainly feel inspired and understand where this quote comes from; although his classroom is calm,  there is  a lot of energy and knowledge in the air. Mr. Ferrick feels really proud when he sees students thinking for themselves; he finds those moments very gratifying. When asked how his experiences tie into his career, he simply stated that he was a military brat and learned to be culturally “mutual.” Yup… go ask him! One interesting fact about him is that he has a pet Ball Python  at home, which tends to wrap itself around his neck, and is sometimes difficult to take off. Finally, he talked about his approach to work: he said it is necessary to show how learning benefits the students; that if it’s not useful outside the school, he’s not going to teach it to ’em.
