Departing words from Head of School 3 July 2023
| Dr. Ken Sell who has served as the head of school since 2014, retired at the end of this school year. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to him for his many years of service at Aoba-Japan International School. As he parts ways with the Aoba community he has shared with us these departing words. Dear All School Community Members, As I prepare to retire from my role as the Group Head of School and return to my home in Australia, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to each and every member of our school community who has been a part of Aoba in some way. Since August 2014, you have all played a crucial role in making a positive difference in the lives of our students. Our achievements have surpassed my initial expectations, and they are a testament to the collective and collaborative efforts of parents, school staff, and board members. Together, we have accomplished remarkable feats. We have implemented innovative practices to enhance teaching and learning experiences from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We have taken risks to develop flexible and responsive curricula for our senior students. We have been leaders in educational reforms in Japan and have become the largest international school system in the country with numerous campuses, and expanding our student body from 230 to over 1540. I want to highlight a few achievements that deserve special recognition. Our approach to teaching and learning, focusing on empowering students to learn how to learn, has been a significant shift from traditional models. This has built students’ confidence and efficacy, preparing them to navigate a rapidly changing world. Additionally, the transformation of our school culture, where trust, collaboration, collegiality, and respect are valued, has contributed to the overall well-being of our school community. We can all celebrate the culture we have collectively built and our team-based problem-solving approach to teaching and learning. However, of greater importance to me is the fact that , as a school community, we have created an environment that can continue to thrive and lead in the future. We have nurtured a school that prepares students for the challenges of today while keeping an eye on the opportunities of tomorrow. I sincerely thank you all for giving me the opportunity to retire, knowing that the schools are in capable hands. I have complete confidence in our leaders and teachers, who are dedicated and committed professionals. I am grateful for the support and active participation of parents in making our school a positive and vibrant place. And I am confident the school board will continue to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit, foster innovation, and provide effective governance to ensure continued investment in enriching the school life of all students. I want to express my deep appreciation for the rewarding time I have had at Aoba. It is an experience I will cherish forever. Sincerely yours, and I wish you all the best. Ken Sell グループ長からの挨拶メッセージ 本校のコミュニティーの皆様へ 学校のグループ長を退任し、オーストラリアの自宅に戻る準備をするにあたり、これまでアオバでお世話になった学校関係者の皆様に、心からの感謝とお礼を申し上げたく存じます。 2014年8月以来、皆様は学生の生活にポジティブな変化をもたらす上で、重要な役割を果たして下さいました。私たちの成果は当初の期待を上回るものであり、保護者、教職員、理事会メンバーが一丸となって努力した証です。 私たちは、力を合わせて、素晴らしい偉業を達成してきました。幼稚園から12年生までの教育と学習経験を向上させるために、革新的な実践を行い、上級生のために、リスクを冒して柔軟で対応力のあるカリキュラムを開発してきました。日本の教育改革をリードし、多くのキャンパスを持つ日本最大のインターナショナルスクールシステムとなり、230人だった生徒数は1540人以上にまで拡大しました。 特別な評価に値するいくつかの業績をご紹介したいと思います。私たちの教育や学習に対するアプローチは、学生が学習方法を学ぶ力をつけることに重点を置いており、従来のモデルから大きく変化しています。これにより、学生の自信と効率が高まり、急速に変化する世界を乗り切る準備が整いました。さらに、信頼、協力、協調性、敬意を重んじる校風の変革は、学校コミュニティ全体の幸福に寄与しています。 私たちは皆、共同で築き上げた文化や、チームによる問題解決型の教育や学習へのアプローチを称賛することができます。しかしながら、私にとってより重要なことは、学校コミュニティとして、将来も繁栄し、リードし続けることができる環境を構築したという事実です。私たちは、明日の機会を見据えながら、今日の課題に取り組む生徒を育てる学校を育んできたのです。 学校が有能な人たちの手に委ねられていることを知りながら、退職の機会を与えてくれた皆さんに心から感謝しています。私は、献身的でプロフェッショナルなリーダーや教師たちに全幅の信頼を寄せています。学校を前向きで、活気のある場所にするために、保護者の方々の支援と積極的な参加に感謝しています。私は、理事会が今後も起業家精神を奨励し、イノベーションを促進し、すべての学生の学校生活を豊かにするための継続的な投資を確保するための効果的なガバナンスを提供し続けることを確信しています。 アオバで有意義な時間を過ごさせていただきましたことに深く感謝いたします。この経験は、私にとって一生の宝物です。 皆様のご健勝を心よりお祈り申し上げます。 ケン セル |
